The school kids in Maras are often coming from families with very poor resources and often did not have breakfast when entering class in the morning. The kitchen and breakfast room in the “Virgen de Fatima” school was in very bad condition and in the “San Luis Gonzaga” school, the facilities did not even exist. Together with Brightlife Volunteers, a volunteer organization from the UK, we managed to establish these facilities to make sure every child is provided breakfast.
This march 2017, we decided to expand our music project that we established in the “San Luis Gonzaga “ school to a second school in the town of Maras: “Virgen de Fatima”. Twice a week, we provide music and painting classes to the students of this elementary school, to promote the individual development and talents of each student. This project is also in conjunction with Bright Light Volunteers.
In 2014, we initiated our music project at the San Luis Gonzaga School in Maras in the Cusco area, in cooperation with the professional local artist Narciso Choque. Children attending this school have low economical resources. Parents of the children of the school work mainly in agriculture. During the music classes, the children are taught all the disciplines of music and art. With this project, we can support the children in developing their talents and creativity. Learning to create and appreciate music and art is very important to the development of children as they grow up. The project has grown over the past years and we are very happy that we had come to the point that we are able to distribute musical instruments to the school and started teaching the children how to play the instruments. Nevertheless, more than it being a project it is also an exchange. The project stimulates environmental awareness. During the classes the children learn songs about the significance of the environment and as a compromise for the music classes and instruments the children promised to keep the surrounding area of the school, their town and the environment clean.
In 2015, we started the project of the “Free Cusco Biking Tour”. The air in Cusco is highly polluted, especially because of the high density of cars. Therefore, we at Cultural Immersion decided to start an initiative to promote environmentally responsible behavior, especially related to the promotion of the use of the bicycle. Every Friday, we offer a free tour, starting at our office at 4pm and bike around the most representative streets of the city. Everyone is invited to join the tour and help us make Cusco a cleaner city.
At Cultural Immersion Travel Peru, we have introduced the tradition to celebrate Christmas with the Andean communities. Every year, we support a different Andean community where people still have very poor resources. During the year we encourage travelers to bring school supplies, tooth brushes and other small items to Peru, which we donate to the children of the Andean community during the Christmas celebration each December 25th.
At the Cultural Immersion office, we changed to only use recycled paper for printing, we use refillable toner cartridges and introduced a policy of printing double-sided and without colors.
We replaced all plastic crockery and do not longer use any disposable coffee cups, plates, etc. or packaging in the office or for our tours
Additionally, we started providing a refillable bottle to all our clients travelling to Peru (water tanks are provided in each of our car), in order to reduce the occurrence of plastic waste.
Finally, we have introduced a strict policy for waste disposal on our tours. In cooperation with our partner agencies, tour guides and drivers, we have made sure that there is no kind of waste left in the natural environment or in the local communities, which have no possibility of proper waste
At Cultural Immersion we changed to buying local, organic products, wherever possible. Almost all products we buy are produced in the local communities in the Cusco area and are bought on the local markets in Cusco.
At our Cultural Immersion office in Cusco, we have replaced all lightbulbs with energy saving bulbs of LEDs.
At Cultural Immersion Travel Peru, we have reduced the use of water to the minimum and trained our staff with relation to this issue. We additionally installed a toilet with a water saving push-button.
